What are some good colleges for wedding planning, or event planning?
I’d like to know of some in California, Maryland, and Kentucky. But anywhere is good.

Honey, I went through all that and NONE of them are any good. They ALL take your money and pretty much teach you the same thing you can learn form books at B&N or on the internet or by working at a few weddings as a caterers helper maybe? It’s all about knack, being unique and being professional. The only thing I honestly found useful was learning about different religions and their wedding customs. The first school I went to didn’t teach a thing about that. The second school I went to taught that off papers they printed off the internet. I got out got the wedding business in 2002. It was a lot of fun back in the 90′s but more and more modern brides tend to want to pay more (and actually get less) thinking more money = better wedding. Not always so. We put on weddings for around $1,500 (less food) and people thought the brides father must of spent $10,000 on his daughters wedding. How did we do it? We bought “lots” of surplus wedding rental supplies and the rest is my secret.
My roommate in college last year is actually planning to do wedding/ event planning as a major! When she was looking for a job in that industry, many of those professionals were saying she didn’t need to go to college to learn that type of stuff, but she is obviously going through with college, just to have something to fall back on.
Many local community colleges might offer programs in that. But you should consider going to a hospitality school. I think it teaches you great business skills, in addition to hospitality skills, that are necessary for the event planning industry. Hope this helps!
If you’re really interested in pursuing that career, you should definitely speak with event planners in your area and see if you can intern with them for the summer! (My roommate did this, and not only did she have a lot of fun, she learned a lot!)
George Mason University in Virginia has a professor there named Maggie Daniels who wrote a book called “Wedding Planning and Management: Consultancy for a Diverse Clientele”. It is an excellent book and approaches wedding planning as a business. She has received a lot of accolade for it and was named one of Modern Bride’s Top 25 Trendsetters. This book is a textbook (albeit with lots of pretty color photos). Every semester she teaches a class called Wedding Planning. She also has a class in the works for Fall 09 about Wedding Planning Direction – Day Of. I highly, highly recommend her class if you are interested in this as a profession. I will warn you that it is not an easy class but you will learn A LOT!
George Washington University in D.C. also has a five-year program that wil allow you to get both your BS and Masters degree. It would be a Bachelor of Science in Business Admin and a Master of Tourism Administration with a focus in Event Management. GWU was the first school in the nation to offer a degree with a concentration in Event Management. Many alumni are high-level conference planners, event coordinators, wedding planners, etc.
Hope this helps.
