If you live in a city where weddings are popular you need to book your reception venue now! Keep this in mine you Do Not Have a Wedding Date UNTIL you book your reception venue. The more popular places book weddings at least 2 to 3 yrs in advance.
After you book your reception hall everything else is gravey. Unless you are getting married in place where selections are very limited. In which case you need to make a list of the vendors that you want for your wedding, contact them and ask how many weddings do they book a weekend? and When can you make an appointment to come and see there work? Once there, if you still want this vendor ask them how soon should you place a deposit?
Oh you might want to invest in a pocket planner to write down all your wedding related dates and appointments only. The two-year pocket planners from the dollar store work just fine.
You need to start this process now because you might as well as say 2006 is bout over (its the middle of Oct.) Besides the sooner you start the sooner you finish and the goal to planning any wedding is to be finsh with EVERYTHING 2 to 3 weeks before the wedding day. For you will have some stress that cannot be avoided, but why have added stress that can be avoided.

Don't start serious planning until approx. 12 months out. Before that point, simply sock away money.

If you plan too early, you create all kinds of problems. 12 months is more than enough time.

Im getting married this march! As far as the time before, Its gonna depend on where you live. If possible, I would book the big stuff like locations of the ceremony and reception asap, can't hurt! As for the other stuff, you prolly have time, but I will say don't get too used to puttin stuff off, I suggest ordering your dress like 8-9 months before, bridesmaids 4-6 monts before, and defiently have deposits on all the important stuff (photos, flowers, cakes, etc...) by 6 months before. Then you have time to work out the kinks, really and truly tho, even tho you don't need to really hurry, you can start as soon as you want! Ive never heard a bride say I wish I had put off ordering my _____. As for ideas, what do you mean? like colors or themes or what? Email me or ask another question and I will give ya tons! Good luck and congrats!

You can go ahead and start planning if you want. Go to http://www.theknot.com and create an account for you and your fiance. There's a checklist online they've got that will give you ideas/suggestions about when things need to be completed. They've also got a place where you can figure your budget online.

A year ahead of time is the usual. Some specialty items, like a unique cake from a very busy bakery require a year ahead order. Go to your local library or book store and you will find wedding plan books that tell you what to do in every step in a time line formula. This is very helpful. You can be sure you are not forgetting something that may be small, but important. Best wishes!

This really depends where you live. In the city where I live, the biggest thing is to book the location and caterer for the supper and dance - most need to be done at least a year ahead. Also, to meet with and book the church - for some religions you need to do pre-marital counselling.
